PSTD Is a terrible condition that can develop after a traumatic event. Usually after an event where there was a threat of serious injury or death to ones self or others.
People experiencing a traumatic event always need support from those around them. But if a person continues to feel traumatised and is showing significant distress and their ability to sleep or function at work or in relationships. If these types of things are happening to you or anyone you know, this could be Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
The symptoms fall into three main categories.
- Re-experiencing distressing thoughts or images of the event over and over again. Having nightmares, experiencing panic attacks, physical reactions similar to those experienced during the event itself.
- Avoiding! In particular avoiding any reminders of the event. Emotional numbing , such as feeling detached, or no longer having strong feelings about anyone or anything.
- Hyper-arousal, feeling agitated and easily irritated, symptoms of anxiety, not being able to sleep, and or waking up frequently throughout the night. Difficulty concentrating.
If these symptoms persist for more than a month it is possible it is PTSD. If these symptoms persist for less than a month it is possibly Acute Distress Disorder(ASD).
